LEGOs. They are the bricks of imagination that I cherished as a kid. Due to the influences of the media, my son has also been bitten by the LEGO bug. One of his first movies at the theater was The LEGO Movie and, since then, all this kid asks for are LEGO sets for his birthday. During the heat wave this summer, I surprised him with the LEGO Voltron mega set and thought it would be a perfect fill-in for weeks to come.
That totally didn’t happen. Would you like to know why? Because, Nathanael is a true LEGO master builder. Voltron was comprised of; 16 bags, 5 lions, several accessories that turned into one ginormous mech and totaled 2,321 pieces…
Nathanael completed it in 3 days. I know what you are thinking and, no, I didn’t help build it. Oh, trust me, I really wanted to, but he wouldn’t let me!? He told me that I would just slow him down.
This kid.
So the next step to take towards LEGO enlightenment was a trip to Boston to visit the LEGOland Discovery Center. When I blogged for Runitlikeamom, I had my own little segment I created, called A Mom’s Travel Guide. I would talk about our family adventures and give some mama tips along the way. I thought to bring back this family travel fun, but with a geeky twist, of course.
Parking in Boston is an art form within itself. If you are scheduled to be there for a specific time, with their Online Saver Ticket program, make sure to get to the center early, to figure out parking, walking and emergency potty breaks before check-in. But knowing how my family works (ok, it’s me…I’m the late one) we decided on the flexible time arrival. The tickets are a little more expensive, but was worth the purchase to not freak out about the time.
Nathanael was first greeted by Gio the Giraffe, which was recently named in loving memory of a 6 year old little boy. <3
We ventured in and got right down to it with LEGO laser, VR, and wizard cycle rides. Nathanael enjoyed the multiple LEGO stations and, the main attraction, the LEGO Cinemas. The theater consisted of 4 different short movies set in a 4D experience, throughout the day.

Overall, the LEGOland Discovery Center was awesome and compact enough to enjoy for a day (about 4-6 hours). What was also great was you could be stamped to go somewhere else and come back later. We walked to lunch and came back for round two. By the end of our visit the fam stopped into the store and got a LEGO set. We look forward to traveling to other LEGOland destinations, but this one was a good starting point.
The next day was geared towards the historical side of Beantown (which mama digs too). My family walked the Freedom Trail and saw landmarks such as; the Old State House, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere’s tomb and Granary Burial Grounds. It was nice to be reminded of how this country was built by the people, for the people (and let’s keep it that way). Nathanael also got to experience the best darn street performances that Boston has to offer.

With stars in my eyes, I even got to chat with a ‘Bostonian patriot’ working on his Woodblock printing press and learned about specific 17th century typefaces he was using and...
…and Nathanael could have cared less. All he couldn’t wait to do was get back to the hotel and build his LEGO set. :)
